One of the UK’s leading Progressive Rock bands, Pendragon first appeared as contemporaries to Marillion in the early 1980s, and the two bands played gigs together on many occasions. Led by Nick Barrett (guitar / vocals), the band also feature Clive Nolan on keyboards, also well known as a member of Arena, as well as powerhouse drummer Scott Higham and long-time bassist Peter Gee.
The band’s first full-length album The Jewel appeared in 1985, and by the time they released the album The World, in 1991, Pendragon had developed an epic yet symphonic sound which was to make them standard bearers for the genre, through classic albums The Masquerade Overture and The Window Of Life. With recent albums Pure and Passion, the band have incorporated a harder-edged sound into their material, with Barrett’s lyrics becoming ever more hard-hitting and socially relevant.
Pendragon’s live shows are where they truly excel, with many people of the opinion that they are currently better as a live unit than they have ever been. UK shows are relatively infrequent, and are certainly an opportunity to be grasped with both hands, as the band’s triumphant, near sell-out, tour in 2011 demonstrated. With a new album due out this year, this Autumn’s live activity is not to be missed!
