DakhaBrakha ist immer noch so etwas wie ein Kult-Phänomen in der Ukraine. Das preisgekrönte Quartett bestehend aus Multiinstrumentalisten und Sängern experimentierte in den letzten fünf Jahren mit ukrainischen Volksmelodien und -rhythmen sowie osteuropäischen und westasiatischen Motiven und versuchte echte, ethnisch spezifische Musikbausteine mit Minimalismus zu vermischen.

DhakhaBrakha macht wilde und unvergessliche Musik, die sakral und modern ist. Packendes Charisma zeichnet die Band aus. Dakha Brakha wurde im Jahre 2004 von Vladyslav Troitskiy, dem Direktor eines Avantgarde-Theaters Dakh („Dach“) gegründet, und der Einfluss ist immer noch evident in den Shows der Band.

Der Name DakhaBrakha ist gleichzeitig tief verwurzelt im Ukrainischen und modern. Im Alt-Ukrainischen bedeutet es „gib/nimm“. DakhaBrakha wurde im Jahre 2004 im Kiewer Zentrum für Zeitgenössische Kunst "Dakh" vom Avantgarde-Theaterdirektor - Vladyslav Troitskiy - gegründet.

Die Performance der Band ist stark von den Erfahrungen im Theaterleben geprägt – ihre Shows wirken szenisch. "Wir haben beschlossen, eine neue Art von Musik zu machen, die vor allem aus unseren einheimischen ukrainischen Volksmotiven besteht aber gleichzeitig mit Afromotiven gemischt ist. Wir kombinieren auch arabische, bulgarische und ungarische Ideen. DakhaBrakha sammelt die Komponente ihres Repertoires während der Expeditionen. Wir gehen in die Dörfer, stellen unsere Zelte auf, besuchen einheimische Omas und bitten sie, ihre Volkslieder zu singen. Wir nehmen sie auf und verwenden sie in unseren Zusammensetzungen" - so die Band. DakhaBrakha ist immer noch so etwas wie ein Kult-Phänomen in der Ukraine, anziehend für das anspruchsvolle Publikum von belesenen Fans, die ihre aggressive Klänge mit einer Menge von rituellen Stammesrhythmen und wilden Katzenmusik sehr mögen.

Sie glauben, dass ukrainische Kultur ein enormes Potenzial hat und dass dies erforscht und aufbewahrt werden sollte. Außerhalb von eigenständigen Gigs ist die Band auch im eigenen Theater als "Haus-Band“ aktiv. Dakh Theater ist europaweit als einer der führenden Produktionshäuser von Avantgarde-Theater bekannt, das Live-Musik von DakhaBrakha mit Theater und Tanz kombiniert um mannigfaltige Produktionen zu erstellen. Ihre Serie von Shakespeare Interpretationen fuhr sie zu vielen der führenden europäischen Veranstaltungsorten wie das Barbican Centre in London im Januar 2007.

DakhaBrakha ist einzigartig in ihrer Vielseitigkeit - sie spielen in kleinen Clubs und Theatern wie auch vor Festivalpublikum. Die Musik von DakhaBrakha ist in mehr als 10 Filmen zu hören, u.a. im neuen Film vom bekannten iranischen Regisseur Mohsen Makmalbaf.

Dakha Brakha is still somewhat of a cult phenomenon in Ukraine. For the past five years, this award-winning, theatrical quartet of multi-instrumentalist singers has been experimenting with Ukrainian folk melodies and rhythms, motifs of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, mixing genuine, ethnically specific material with minimalism. DhakhaBrakha create wild and unforgettable music that is at once sacred and modern. The sweeping charisma of the act lies in its roots – Dakha Brakha was founded in 2004 by Vladyslav Troitskiy, the director of an avant-garde theatre Dakh, and the influence is still evident in the shows of the band.

The name is original, outstanding and authentic at the same time. DakhaBrakha means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language.DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the avant-garde theatre director –Vladyslav Troitskiy. Theatre work has left its mark on the band performances – their shows have never been staged without the scenic effects.“We decided to create a new style of music that consists mainly of our native Ukrainian folk motifs, with some African-styles added in. We also combine Arab, Bulgarian and Hungarian ideas. Dakha Brakha collects the components of its repertoire during our expeditions. We go out to villages, pitch our tents and visit local babushkas and ask them to sing their folk songs. They believe that Ukrainian culture has enormous potential that should be explored and retained.As well as performing gigs as a band in their own right they are also the ‘house’ band for the Dakh Theatre company . Dakh Theatre is known throughout Europe as one of the leading production houses of avant-garde theatre combining live music from DakhaBrakha with theatre and dance to create some intense productions. Their series of Shakespeare interpretations has brought them to many of Europe’s leading venues including London’s Barbican in January 2007.DakhaBrakha are unique in their versatility – they could play both at small clubs, little theatres and in front of one hundred-thousand-strong audience.The music of DakhaBrakha is used in more than 10 films and is in the new film of famous Iranian director Mohsen Makmalbaf.
