The Robin Trower story started in the mid Sixties when he began his recording career in the Southend rhythm and blues band the Paramounts. But the first time Trower truly surfaced on rock’n’roll’s radar was in 1967, with Procol Harum – house band of the Summer of Love. He completed five albums and many tours with them before breaking away for a solo career in 1971. As punk and new wave attempted to redefine the musical landscape; Robin, like many ‘classic rock’ artists of the era, made changes musically to stay fresh and relevant. Robin’s distinctive style of playing retained a sizeable live following in the United States. Robin Trower live is an experience not to be missed. Phil Varca & The SlamJammers - who will be celebrating 25 years together as a working Long Island band - take the opening slot for Robin Trower at The Paramount in Huntington.
Lead by virtuoso guitarist Phil Varca, the trio - Varca, bass player Tom Porter and drummer Russell Stone, display a finely tuned ability to listen to and play off of each other. Performing together since 1989, the band's live shows have become one of their greatest assets. Extended improvisational jams and musical interplay have come to define the group's live performances and reflect their experience.
Throughout their 25 year history, Phil Varca & The SlamJammers has enjoyed many notable performances, including shared bills with: Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamassa, Foghat, Dave Mason, Bo Diddley, Clarence "Gatemouth"Brown, NRBQ, Double Trouble, Shemekia Copeland, Chris Duarte, Popa Chubby & John Cafferty.
Phil says: "There's nothin' I like more than sharing a bill with another an act and playing to part of a crowd that is there to see someone else. Their people don't know you & they don't owe you! We only get one chance to make a first impression...so I love just playing for those people ...turning them on to our music for the first time & seeing their reaction!"
