Biografia

Air é um duo francês de música eletrônica, formado em 1995 por Nicolas Godin e Jean-Benoît Dunckel. O nome “AIR” é o acrônimo de Amour, Imagination, Rêve (sonho). Antes de formarem a banda, Godin estudou arquitetura na École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versalhes, enquanto Dunckel optaria por matemática, na mesma instituição onde porventura acabariam se conhecendo.

O estilo de Air é caracterizado pela fusão da sofisticada música ambiente com a música pop e eletrônica. De inspiração retrô, o duo possui influências claras na música francesa (a “chanson française”, particularmente de Serge Gainsbourg), passando pelo cool jazz e a bossa nova, até o som dos sintetizadores setentistas de artistas como Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis e Francis Lai. Outras influências incluem o rock psicodélico e o — como pode-se notar em faixas como Dirty Trip, Surfing on a Rocket, Do the Joy ou no álbum 10,000 Hz Legend — influenciados particularmente pelos Pink Floyd e Tangerine Dream.

Air frequentemente está envolvido em projetos de trilhas sonoras (ainda como uma característica musical), incluindo o álbum homônimo do filme “The Virgin Suicides” da cineasta estadunidense Sofia Coppola. Em 2011, Godin e Dunckel foram convidados a compor uma nova trilha sonora para o filme mudo ícone de Georges Méliès, “A Trip to the Moon” (Le Voyage dans la Lune), de 1901, que encontrava-se sob restauração a quase uma década.

    Pink Floyd started life as student architects - and there is a strong relationship between the music of Floyd and Air. It is also well-known that music and mathematics go together so I am not surprised by this combination in the slightest.

    Air is like Röyksopp with more guitars, on happiness pills and are sleeping for beauty ^^ Especially Talkie Walkie is euphoric and so well crafted. // I am just unable to accept the fact that a mathematician and an architect crafts this music. These guys are supposed to be extremely rational and physical (this is my possibly 'ridiculous' prejudice, because of my flunks and neglects on rational classes in middle school and my ongoing high school) in my way of thoughts. I'd like to discuss this with another Air fan, who's also good at these rational fields as both of the Air members are. Please let me know if you'd like to say me a few words on this ^^

    I may be tight-brained for thinking that way, but math and geometry has not been a friend to me yet, I find it so opposite from thoughts/emotions. So I am amazed by their actual occupations, seriously.

    I've just found out that Air is half by a MATHEMATICIAN, and half by an architect. I can't believe my eyes how these rational guys created such beautiful and sentimental pieces of music. I mean, a mathematician + architect and Cherry Blossom Girl? Come on?
