i was schtupid in 2022.. braxton is a lovely artist .. one of the most expressionistic in the free jazz scene and a very diverse discography .. i apologize for the inherently anti-avantgarde comments of my past as they recognized music as having constructs that should not be broken and as such exemplified an example of the reason why unbroken ambition is unable to thrive often in the music scene

I'd always been apprehensive about Braxton's music. His early stuff like For Alto and 3 Compositions of New Jazz are very difficult and after a few months of immersion I still find them hard to parse. New York, Fall 1974, Five Pieces (1975), and the Montreux/Berlin Concerts are a bit more manageable but still are no easy listen. This year I had a new determination to try and understand him and although I've barely made a dent in his discography, I have found an album that I wholeheartedly enjoyed which I think would serve as a far better introduction to him than to start chronologically. If you are also a bit averse to Braxton's more challenging pieces I would recommend Six Monk's Compositions (1987) as the perfect (re)-jumping on point. It's a wonderful interpretation of some notable Monk tunes. He maintains his unique playing style, and gives an amazing performance at that, but the compositions, being Monk tunes, are far more accessible for a listener like me and maybe also for you.

The list of artists I'd consider "musical geniuses" is like 10-15 people long, and I think it's safe to say Anthony Braxton is one of them, the absolute king of blocking a soundscape.

the Holy trinity of Solo improvisation: Derek Bailey, Kaoru Abe and Anthony Braxton. Nothing really compares to hearing each of them play unaccompanied, elder Gods of music.

C'mon kiddo, it's simply self-indulgent musical masturbation. Have you even heard REAL music and not this cacophony?! I will take Queen every time over this free form bullshit - here is the plot twist: it's called improv 'cause they have no idea what they are playing... BUNCH OF POSERS, A 3 yo COULD PLAY BETTER THAN THEM

And he can play standards too! Contrary to what some naive ignorants can or cannot imagine ;) - I mean those who'd think that these improvisers do a free form because they could not play a tune right. I saw him live with standards in January 2020. 23 Standards (Quartet) from 2003 is also a great thing.

"Braxton is notorious for naming his pieces as diagrams, typically labeled with cryptic numbers and letters. Sometimes these diagrams have an obvious relation to the music — for instance, on the album For Trio the diagram-title indicates the physical positions of the performers, but in many cases the diagram-titles remain inscrutable. The titles can themselves be musical notation indicating to the performer how a piece is played. Sometimes the letters are identifiable as the initials of Braxton's friends and musical colleagues."

If you don't understand then maybe you should go to the source (the guy) and educate yourself - 'the guy has written a lot of stuff.'

@fae959: See Gerry Mulligan, Coleman Hawkins (Started out on bass and switched to tenor), and Adrian Rollini. Highly regarded bass sax players. Contrabass instruments, though, are extremely hard to obtain and probably even harder to play. A lot of people have difficulty controlling the bass clarinet.

a lot of good jazz composers tend to have the ability to play multiple instruments, whether they deem their skills highly enough to feature in performances is another matter.
