CESARIA IN THE BEGINNING
Cesaria was born on the 27th August 1941 in Mindelo. Her mother Dona Joana enjoyed preparing succulent dishes for her husband and five children. She worked as a cook for Whites (rich people) who particularly appreciated her skills. She also liked music and musicians. An extraordinarily convivial, well turned-out and thoughtful person, she remained Cesaria’s confidante all her life. Cesaria’s father, Justino da Cruz Evora, played cavaquinho (a small four-stringed guitar), guitar and violin. Among his friends was B. Leza, Cape Verde’s favourite composer. Cesaria was only seven when he died.

She remembers scraps of her childhood and often speaks of Eulinda, a former neighbour and friend who lived near to Lombo, the red-light district of Mindelo, a port that once boasted brothels to rival those of Amsterdam. As a little girl, Cesaria was always making friends with people much older than herself who “kept her on the straight and narrow”. When she was still a young girl, she went to stay with her grandmother and was educated by nuns, an experience that taught her to despise all moral strictures.

Cesaria (Cize to her friends) often sang a wide range of songs and gave Sunday performances from the bandstand on the main square, accompanied by her brother Lela on saxophone. As a teenager, she made her debut at the Gremio. Cesaria’s life was closely linked to the Lombo district, once occupied by the Portuguese expeditionary force.
