Di awal tulisan ini, saya ingin menulis beberapa kritik tentang JRL tahun ini, yang saya ingat saja tentunya. Pertama, susunan jadwal di web yang tidak memberi banyak info tentang artis yang tampil. Hanya beberapa artis saja yang jika di-klik memberikan info cukup lengkap. Padahal, tentu saja info tentang artis-artis yang tidak terlalu dikenal atau malah belum dikenal sama sekali, lebih dibutuhkan dibanding nama-nama besar yang sebagian besar orang sudah mafhum. Ini membuat orang-orang lebih malas -jika tidak mencari info di tempat lain- mendatangi band-band bagus di panggung yang jauh dari keramaian. Kedua, ditiadakannya campground. Padahal, dengan semakin ramainya orang yang mendatangi JRL, tentu saja di antaranya banyak yang mengambil 3-day-pass dan ingin merasakan atmosfer hidup di venue (seperti Woodstock…

Rock has obviously been dominated by male vocals, so most of the bands i listen to have male vocalists. But here are some of my all-time favorites... these include mostly singles, songs that have a video that may or may not have gotten much airplay, & many that you see normally on Karaoke lists that i love to sing... along with many others i'd luv to see at karaoke (they really need more Siouxsie & Concrete Blonde!!). They're listed basically in chronological order. There won't be nearly as many 2000's songs listed as there are 90s, sadly... it seems to have stopped there for alternative rock.

Finding indie artists of today covering Frank Sinatra on iTunes inspired me to look through my music library for some more singers of today covering the hits of yesterday, preferred songs from the 30s, 40s or 50s. Well, this was the plan but finally it turned out that I wasn't able to find covers of such old songs. The second approach was gathering cover songs twice as old as the performer but this rule has been broken if I found a cover song that was too awesome to exclude it from the list. THE CORNER

Coming across more like the end-of-year performance of Songwriting Masterclass 101, The Corner’s measly crowd bore witness to one of the greatest night’s entertainment 2008 had to offer in all it’s humble beauty, shy glory and Australian twang.

The Millers Tale’s album Overland and tonight’s rendering of many of its songs give a jaw-dropping ‘where-have-I-been/how-did-I-miss-this?’ sense of wonder. This is perfect traveling music. The songs feel extensions of the land; incredibly simple and direct, warm Harriet Wheeler-esque vocals from bassist Bec Quade with melodies as appealing as guitarist John Maclane’s suggestion to ‘buy everyone’s CDs and bust this recession’s arse.’ Slices of folk-pop perfection follow hard on each other’s heels with Constellation and Elbow Room jostling for highlight, but it’s the miraculous Wasn’t The One For You that reveals the brilliance of these songwriters. Amazing.

One band you could trust to follow such an opening set would be Machine Translations, tonight a trio. …
