I've been on the site for over 2 and a half years retard. And I went to high school where I did most of my work in front of a computer, so I listened to music the whole time. I listen to music when I'm chilling. I listen to music when I work out. I listen to music while I read. I listen to music while I play video games. I have listened to every track I have scrobbled. And that still doesn't change the fact that IT is a dipshit.

@ arrell GZA doesn't put out as many albums as GFK, but all of his albums are lyrically insane. If they had the production of LS they would all be considered classics. Every single verse on Beneath the Surface, Legend of the Liquid Sword, Grandmasters (vs DJ Muggs) and Pro Tools.. the GZA never fell off like other great artists back in the day. GZA is just not an album guy, but all of his verses are classic. The production has to change, that's all. With RZA on LS2: Return of the Shadowboxer, I'm pretty sure that will happen.

I don't really get people rating GZA as a lyricist and MC. Liquid Swords was released in 1995, and it's 2011. If GZA were all he were made out to be, he'd have more albums demonstrating his skills and lyricism. As it is though, he only has Liquid Swords (and the WTC material) to show for. I don't think it's right that you can only have one album out of many, to which people hold you in high esteem for. If anything, it could just be a fluke. It's all good to rate Liquid Swords for being a great hip-hop album, but GZA himself hasn't been relevant for many, many years in the hip-hop scene.

@ Music-Ninja Already know K-Rino. He is mad underrated. He is one of the illest lyricist. Still I think GZA's lyrical ability is second to none. Unlike Canibus who uses big words to prove how smart he is (still an amazing lyricist), GZA is clever and makes things look easy. The way he uses imagery, similes, internals, multies, imagery. GZA has it all. Liquid Swords is the greatest rap album of all time.

@Weirdo That's a really good comparison. I'd say Illmatic > Soul on Ice > Liquid Swords. All are in my top 10 albums though.

Lyrical content definitely adds to the music and is always a plus, but there are alot of things in hip hop that are more essential to create good music, imo (flow, delivery, good production) and yeah IT sucks. He makes some of the most boring music around. [2]

Question for the true heads: Liquid Swords, Soul on Ice or Illmatic? As for Technique, I think what you have to remember is that he's a preacher first and a rapper second. His interest is in promoting his message, music is nothing more than his chosen medium so comparing him to cats like GZA, who are artists before anything else, is redundant. I will say that when GZA is on point few can touch him, least of all Technique.

Raphael, I've been saying this shit for yeaaaaaars. If hip-hop was purely about lyricism, it wouldn't be able to compete with actual literature. GZA combines it with great flow, delivery, and in the case of Liquid Swords, amazing fucking beats, to make it music. Immortal Technique sucks. I don't listen to Lil B, but I'm sure he's at least an interesting character and doesn't talk about conspiracy theories in every fucking song.

Raphael... I understand what you're saying on the Immortal Tech being wack (IMO he's the most overrated underground emcee around) but I can't at all agree on "lyrical content is not important." If you want music that's going to last and have long term substance, you can't just rely on the beats and flows to always entertain you. That's how it is for me at least. I think of that type of rap as like a doughnut or dessert, it's appealing and great at first, but there's not a lot there. When you have thought provoking or meaningful lyrics in the mix, it changes that. I think that's where the GZA really excells.

My Point was, that a rapper can rap about anything, it's how he rapps and how the beat fits to the rapping no matter what the lyrical content is.

Intelligent Hip Hop is boring, U Serious ? I Mean I Don't Give A Fuck if A Rapper rapps about Politics or pimpin hoes, it's how it sounds at the end. But there is a lot of good stuff with intelligent lyrics. GZA is a prime example.
