Biografia

Joanna Newsom nasceu em 1982. É harpista, pianista, cantora e compositora. Suas canções são inspiradas em sua cidade Natal, Nevada (EUA).

Newsom estudou composição e teoria musical no Mills College, Califórnia.

Após uma série de apresentações com o cantor e ator Will Oldham, ela logo conseguiu assinar um contrato com a gravadora Drag City e produziu o seu primeiro álbum The Milk-Eyed Mender em 2004. Logo a seguir, Newsom saiu em excursão com Devendra Banhart e a banda Vetiver.

O trabalho de Newsom tornou-se destaque na cena do indie rock e sua fama começou a crescer, em parte devido a um número de apresentações ao vivo e às participações no The Jimmy Kimmel Show da rede de televisão e de rádio ABC.

Seu segundo álbum Ys foi lançado em novembro de 2006. O álbum traz orquestrações e arranjos de Van Dyke Parks, produção de Steve Albini e mixagem de Jim O’Rourke. Durante uma viagem, Bill Callahan sugeriu que Newsom ouvisse o álbum Song Cycle de Van Dyke Parks. Ela gostou tanto de seu trabalho que o convidou para participar dos arranjos do seu álbum Ys.

Embora seu jeito de tocar harpa não seja completamente diferente do método tradicional, ela considera seu estilo diferenciado dos demais harpistas clássicos. Ela foi grandemente influenciada pelo estilo polimétrico de tocar utilizado pelos instrumentistas da África Ocidental que utilizam o kora (um tipo de instrumento de corda). Sua professora de harpa, Diana Stork, ensinou-lhe o método básico de quatro batidas contra três, que pode ser ouvido em Ys, particularmente, na metade da faixa “Sawdust & Diamonds”.

    Something that excites me when I think about Joanna Newsom (constantly) is knowing that when I'm like, 60 or something, I'll have at least 8 or 9 of her albums and all of them will be flawless. We can't rush perfection so I'm willing to wait as long as it takes. We should think more about what moods, themes, elements and LYRICS she'll unleash unto the World in her next record, not how she's going to "one-up" her previous one. Milk-Eyed Mender, Ys and Have One On Me are all beautiful in their own ways, and the next album will be too. <3

    She can take the time she needs for the new album as long as the longer it will take more songs she will release. I'm talking about the 4 year delay between "Ys" and "Have One On Me" resulting on the triple disc epic beautifulness of the later.
