Somehow remind me of a meeting of Can's Rhythm, the lyrical & musical invention of post-punk AND the dubwize tricks of '70s Reggae... Unfortunately the freshness dried up after the duo's first two albums.

I have just rediscovered my love of Laika! They are utterly soothing while somehow managing to be miraculously and simultaneously intellectually stimulating. The lyrics are fantastic in the way that they range from impressionistic to detached to forboding to wistful to the outright hilarious (as in Badtimes). In addition, the genius of the technical composition is its deceptively simple interplay of rhythmic structure and loop overlays.

I miss the days when I was obsessed with these guys. Finding them back in 2006 was like coming home for the first time... Been waiting ever since for them to release a new album. Here's to hoping that they haven't forgotten they finished half of it already.

both stereolab and laika are heavily influenced by krautrock, and both consequently take a much more analog approach to making electronic music. that laika's first album makes reference to one of the first electronic bands ever, silver apples, a band that also had a heavy influence on kraut, is no small coincidence.

I remember listening to Sound Of Satellites in Virgin Megastore on one of their listening posts. I really wanted to buy it but didn't. Can't remember why not. Then forgot all about it until now.
