I have noticed Gregor's "idiomatic" affinity for following those rhythmic arcs so well, with precision but in an organic vacillation. I have heard the words "organic logic" applied to Sibelius and now that I think about it the phrase aptly applies to Janáček as well. I will search for that recording with haste.

I enjoy Mackerras' Sinfonietta (mostly for his tempo on the last movement) and am partial to his operas (especially Káťa). I've only heard Gregor on From the House of the Dead. I think he adds to the primal sound that we need for "authentic" Janáček, where as relatively more non-Czech conductors tend to over-romanticize him in the pre-war operatic fashion, and in a sense lose that Czech feature that I find vital to the vocal works of Janáček (I mean, From the House of the Dead is ambiguously pre-war and post-war, and his greatest operas came on the tail's end of WWI, the Mass a Pan-Slavic work in an independent Czechoslovakia, another topic). Gregor and Neumann both bring qualities to that opera which elude Mackerras and Boulez, and I think it is most likely due to their cultural roots. Speaking of which, you are basically in a cultural epicenter and being on a student's budget myself I can only imagine the frustration, haha. Listen to that Bělohlávek "Brouček" if you have the time.

I agree on the subjectivity of Harnoncourt's interpretations -- but it really does beg the question if a truly positivist approach is even possible, that is, with the style Janáček intended (is this the oxymoron?)...and it seems to me that Janáček encourages a certain personal liberty within his phrasings, if not at least linguistically. Perhaps I should have rephrased when I used the term "authenticity". As for Bělohlávek, I have heard him on Taras Bulba and other orchestral works, but specifically his Taras Bulba on the 1992 Chandos disc I have is more than worth a listen. I wish I could hear him on Katya and perhaps even another recording of Osud, for which I can only find the Mackerras...which I consider strong but like you mentioned before he does lend a "civilized" touch to the jagged motifs, which I should enjoy to hear loosened like I hear from Bělohlávek. I envy your future performance of the Mass. Where do you live that you get access to such great culture?

Well as far as contemporary conductors go, I would be elated to see Salonen tackle Janáček. I should say that I like your thinking -- Harnoncourt is a stickler for authenticity and part of me does believe the aural image we have of Janáček today is incomplete. The Mass is certainly not an overlooked work but perhaps it is time to revisit it from another angle. Seavas I will have to check out that Boulez concert for sure.

honestly, I don't really know who would be able to make a truly inspired reading of the Mass nowadays, probably because I'm not that familiar with contemporary conductors. The reason why I said Harnoncourt is that every recording that the man puts out garner lots of attention, and that his care for authenticity means that he'd use the superior original score over the performing version. Therefore I think that, even if the recording in itself isn't that satisfactory, it'd probably inspire other conductors to look into the autenthic score and there we might get the truly great recording that we're looking for.

Taxes do you find most conductions of his mass insubstantial? There is debate on the structure of the work, but what qualities do you think Harnoncourt could provide alongside those of Mackerras, Kempe, or even Rattle?

we should petition for someone like harnoncourt to set things straight with the Glagolithic Mass once and for all. Not his repertoire at all but hey, there's historical research needed and stuff! And besides, I hear that he wants to do Wozzeck eventually, if he can do Wozzeck he can do Janacek. That's my philosophy anyway.

I need help people - I found on youtube first part of 2nd String Quartet performed by Pacifica Quartet and it was stupendous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdTAlC3uxEM . So I've decided to find and listen the whole thing. However I found Emerson Quartet's version and it was much much worse. Could somebody recommend me a better (recorded) performance? (better than Emerson's that is)
