Woooooahly crap!
Out 10 2005, 18h03 por andrewbiles
Had a delivery on the weekend and hadn't woken up in time to answer the door (8:30 Saturday morning - not going to happen!) so I went and picked it up this morning at about 8 before going to Uni. It was a nice selection of CDs and having got to Uni early (somehow) I started opening them through boredom, upset that I wasn't going to get to listen to them, but hoping that my teacher would let me shove one on at some point. Anyway, that didn't happen and a four hour lesson went by pretty quickly with discussions on MIDI Timecode (ooooh, exciting) to Nuclear War. Afterwards a meeting on the record label got going and looks like it's finally taking off (so any London bands, if you happen to read this, message me). We're looking to start off with a compilation release just to kind of get our head through the door.

Top 10 Week 5 AND(!) 6
Out 8 2005, 22h25 por shifto112
Time for a weekly chart catch-up.
Sep 18-25
1
Bad Weekend 5 - I think this was suitable because the weekend concerned was fairly bad, if I recall. Nice little riff.
2 In Between Lines 4 - This would be in my top 5 songs on my overall track chart if I hadn't tagged it incorrectly the first time. I mean, what does "In Bet" mean? Really beautiful instrumental though.
2 Little Yellow Spider 4 - Folky acoustic song with very amusing lyrics about little yellow spiders, psychedelic dancing crabs and sexy pigs from the bearded Devendra Banhart.
2 The Black Crow 4 - Dark, broody...damn good.
2
Sugar Kane 4 - This is some of the finest 6 minutes of indie guitar playing I have ever heard.
2
Drinkin' 4 - I love that little riff tee-hee. Fewer horns now but still same old RBF..
2 Magic Hours 4 - Wow.
2 Grandfather's Nursery 4 - I can't find this anywhere on any Pulp album! Grr.. Probably their most beautiful song, builds up to a wonderful climax "And here comes the rain.."

My new music (from eMusic) and gigs coming up....
Set 26 2005, 16h39 por andrewbiles
Minus the Bear - They make beer commercials like this
Slowly been getting back into these guys, and I only own 'Highly refined pirates' out of their catalogue, so I'm slowly working on the rest. This is the best I've heard so far.
Mark Kozelek - Rock n Roll Singer
Huuuuge fan of Red House Painters, well, not huge, but a big fan, and I finally bothered to get tickets to see Mark Kozelek the other day (performing with Mojave 3 playing Red House Painters songs!) and so I thought I better get stuff I was missing. There were three or four tracks missing from this EP/album though which is a shame.
Sam Prekop - Who's your new professor
Ex-Sea And Cake member, I only found out recently that he'd done solo work when I received a track on a compilation and I liked it enough to download the whole album.
Blonde Redhead - Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons
A band I've been meaning to check out for a long time now and I'm glad I finally did, the vocals take a bit of time to enjoy… -
Good day was today (well, by the time I finish this, yesterday)
Set 23 2005, 23h43 por andrewbiles
Indeed it was a good day. The last couple have been actually. It was good going back to Uni and seeing everyone again on Thursday. I got my timetable and found out that I've got Fridays off, although it comes at the price of having to be in at 9am on a Monday. Ah well, three day weekend. Only have five lessons in the week as well, which is a shock, but some are four hours long!
Yesterday I don't remember doing anything at all.
Today I got Garth Marenghi's 'Darkplace' on DVD. It's not an official DVD but people are selling the six episodes that were shown on channel four a few years back and I had to have it. Excellent show if you haven't seen it before. Also got '1972' by Josh Rouse and 'Singer songwriter project' by David Blue (the latter being the better of the two). Then I decided to purchase tickets to see The Decemberists on November 17th at ULU which should be enjoyable. Then I found an article on Indie Workshop saying that there were 4AD 25th anniversary celebration shows going on in November… -
Broke means nothing these days....
Set 12 2005, 23h17 por andrewbiles
Well, in my mind the credit card is probably the most evil thing ever invented. Fuck knows how I'm ever going to pay off the money I've spent on it along with my student loan. I guess, like the South Park I saw the other day, I can forget about it for a couple of years, everything will be fine by then. (The South Park episode was one where they blame a friend for setting the teacher on fire when they were three or something and then basically say, "sod it. In five years he'll have forgotten". The kid then comes back to kill them and yadda, yadda, yadda they survive).
Anyway, I've been doing a bit of cataloging that I've been meaning to do for years (in some cases) now.....
Red House Painters - Ocean Beach
Cat Power - Moon pix
American Football - s/t (vinyl)
Cursive - The Ugly Organ
New End Original - Thriller
The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic
Calexico/Iron & Wine - In the reins
The Cloud Room - s/t
Josh Rouse - Dressed up like Nebraska
Proper Grounds - Dogtown Circus Gang

Well it's late.....

I ended up watching the end of that '100 greatest #1's' programme on E4 tonight and what a suprise what were the top two tracks. I'll leave you a bit of space to contemplate whether channel 4 had any originality in their decision.....
... The answer you're looking for is, "no", they indeed didn't. #2 was Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody and #1 was John Lennon - Imagine. Now I don't want to put these songs down as they are considered classics (although I personally can't stand Queen), but come on, every poll of best ever songs/best #1's whatever stupid idea they come up with, one of those two always wins. I want to start some kind of revolution with this as I'm sure there's been plenty of great numbers 1's in the past. I'd maybe even rate that Mr Blobby track over 'Bohemian Rhapsody' as I've grown as tired as can be with it. As for Graham Norton presenting the programme, I don't even want to go into how stupid that was. … -
