Sonata Arctica é uma banda da Finlândia de .

A banda foi fundada por Tony Kakko, Jani Liimatainen, Tommy Portimo e Pentti Peura na cidade de Kemi em 1996. Com o nome original de Tricky Beans, a banda tocava musicas que em sua maioria eram influenciadas por hard rock e pouco se aproximavam do power metal de hoje. Durante a sua pequena carreira, eles gravaram três demos (Friend ‘till the End, Agre Pamppers e PeaceMaker) que nunca foram enviados a nenhuma gravadora. A primeira música demo para o primeiro contrato com a gravadora Spinefarm Records foi Letter to Dana, escrita por Tony Kakko.

Em 1997, o nome da banda mudou para Tricky Means, e daquele ponto até 1999 fui muito trabalhado e drasticamente alterado, adquirindo forte ênfase nas melodias dos teclados e realçando uma fácil distinção nos ritmos do baixo e da guitarra. O vocalista Tony Kakko revelou seu estilo limpo de cantar que se apóia tanto em falsetes como em tenor. Durante esse tempo Pentti Peura deixou a banda.

Em 1999, a banda entrou nos estúdios para gravar a demo FullMoon. A banda era composta por Tony Kakko nos vocais e teclado, Jani Liimatainen na guitarra, Janne Kivilahti no baixo e Tommy Portimo na bateria. A demo foi então enviada à Spinefarm Records. Um contrato logo se encaminhou e a banda mudou seu nome para Sonata Arctica.

Mais tarde naquele ano, o primeiro single do Sonata Arctica (UnOpened) foi lançado na Finlândia. Ele entrou no Top 20 dos mais vendidos na semana do lançamento e logo a banda havia fechado acordos com marcas do mundo todo para o lançamento do primeiro álbum. O álbum Ecliptica saiu no final de 1999 e teve um lançamento global recebendo ótimas críticas.

    One thing I don't understand about Jani-whiners: I actually think the bigger change in soloing took place when Mikko left. Elias is an incredible guitarist, and that definitely comes through on this album. Sonata's style has been evolving the entire time, and Jani's leaving had very little effect on this transformation.

    loved the new album! It's like they're not taking themselves too seriously as with Unia and TDoG but still keeping the music great. Alone In Heaven didn't hit me though. Still, I hope with the next album they dig into a deeper sound like they did in Unia.. maybe even deeper.

    The most annoying part of this album is that they put the worst track (Don't be mean) right in the middle of the best section of the album ( Alone in Heaven > The Day > Cinderblox > Wildfire 2) and it totally ruins the flow. It's funny because The Day is an example of how to do a slow tempo song and Don't Be Mean is a really good example of how to write a boring ballad.

    Definitely, Stones Grow Her Name is WAY better than The Days of Grays. Best songs are Shitload of Money (the best one BY FAR), Losing My Insanity, I Have a Right and Cinderblox (helluva funny track). For me, SGHN reminds me more the early albums of the band. And take note: I don't miss Jani at all. Bands aren't meant to be together forever... [2]

    I think the solos on SGHN are great! A huge improvement over Days (though I love the album).

    I just read an interesting fact about the track Only the Broken Hearts (Make You Beautiful) from an interview with Tony Kakko: "- Originally, I wrote this track for a band which plays "heavy metal for children" (SauruXet or Hevisaurus), but the reply from the band was it should be a track for Sonata Arctica. So I had to rethink the words a little, erase away all the flying lizards."
