Biografia

Steven John Wilson nasceu em 3 de Novembro de 1967 no distrito de Kingston Upon Thames, em Londres, Inglaterra. Aos 6 anos, mudou-se para a cidade de Hemel Hempstead no condado de Hertfordshire, também Inglaterra. Steven descobriu seu amor pela música por volta dos 8 anos. Tudo começou em um natal quando seus pais se presentearam com LPs: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon e Donna Summer - Love to Love You Baby. Steven então passou boa parte de sua infância ouvindo a estes albums.

Ambos LPs iriam influenciar seu então futuro estilo de composição. Seu interesse em Pink Floyd o levou ao experimental/psicodélico rock conceitual (Porcupine Tree & Blackfield). Já o seu interesse por Donna Summers o levou ao trance/groove visto no primeiro álbum de No-Man (embora este projeto tenha seguido uma direção diferente após este primeiro álbum).

Enquanto criança, Steven foi forçado a apreder violão, mas ele acabou não gostando disto e seus pais pararam de pagar pelas aulas. Entretanto, aos 11 anos, Steve resgatou seu antigo violão com cordas de nylon de seu sótão e começou a fazer experimentos com ele. Como ele mesmo relata: “… roçar microfones nas cordas e gravar os resultados num sistema de fitas em bobinas magnéticas, produzindo assim uma forma de gravação multipista (multitrack) enquanto misturava suas gravações entre as duas máquinas cassete”. Aos 12 anos, seu pai, que era engenheiro eletrônico, construiu para Steven seu primeiro gravador multitrack, assim ele pôde começar seus experimentos com possibilidades de gravação, como em um estúdio.

    One thing I can't quite grasp is why there has been no mention whatsoever of Edgar Allan Poe. His most famous poem is about a raven, for crying out loud! If at least Wilson had sang "Lenore" instead of "Lilly"...

    No-Man and Blackfield are "abandoned" by SW. In fact, Wilson gave the commercial control of the band to AG since he was just a poor bastard without him.

    I hardly ever listen to No-Man these days since Nosound does everything No-Man does better. Even Bowness sang better when made a guest appearance on Nosound's second album. If SW dropped No-Man and Blackfield then he might have just about enough time to run PT and his solo stuff simultaneously.
