Personally people should lay off this whole hipster thing. If people want to listen to the more underground artists then what's wrong with that? Will the desire to find underground stuff (as a listener) or self-promote (as an artist) give you all venereal diseases? I don't think so.

"The tag also sees use by musicians and artists who wish to promote themselves for having a smaller audience, and often artists are ‘untagged’ by users once they breach the 2000 listeners benchmark." ..I don't see the problem here. What are people bitching about? Self-promotion is hipster? k

"Built by 3,377 people (Used 342,722 times) In your Library (34 uses)" -- so if we all would listen to our radio... this tag has really short life-span.

It's only a "hipster tag" to people that are intimidated by it (for their own reasons, not anything inherent to the tag). It helps to get unknown musicians noticed. Nothing wrong with that.
