    • 70's heavy metal - the best music the world can offer.

      Mai 6 2011, 0h37

When metal was born, in the late 60's and early 70's, they didn't have the same equipment for making extreme distortion with their amps, they had to push the limit and doublejack their speakers. It doesn't get more metal than that. Pounding all the sound you can make from what you have available.

Let's start with a real classic of the classics, Deep Purple - Fireball

And then a really heavy one, considered the first heavy metal song by many!
      Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

One of the finest, heaviest and most powerful metal monsters..
      Judas Priest - Dissident Aggressor

And we can't forget the german metal legends either!
      Scorpions - He's a Woman, She's a Man

And then the band where Scorpions' little brother Michael ended up:
      UFO - Rock Bottom

Noone can ever forget the divineness that is Dio and Blackmore:
      Rainbow - Kill the King

Remembered as progrock giants, but they made their metal in the old days!
      Rush - Anthem

One of the first speed metal acts of the 70's, one hell of a man!
      Motörhead - Bomber

Enjoy the riff-power of this one!
      Budgie - Breadfan

On of their wild ones. A crazy metal classic!
      Uriah Heep - Free'n Easy

Late 70's metal anthem of the best kind!
      Saxon - Judgement Day

Known for experimenting in all rock genres, Queen actually began their career as a heavy metal monster:
      Queen - Stone Cold Crazy

Well, hope you got some good experiences, and some of you may had a great introduction to the purest form of metal; the original 70's heavy metal! Hope you enjoyed this entry and have found yourself some good, classic metal bites to share with your friends!

      Stay heavy

    • The tragic decline of modern metal

      Fev 2 2011, 17h52

Ok, before anyone read this: I'm not an elitist. For some reason I have to say that every time I write a journal entry. Sad, but true.
I despise elitism, I just like metal to be metal-related :

The decline of Heavy Metal - happening now ?

What's happening today? Have I missed the whole meaning of metal?
The magazine "Metal Hammer" for the last few years for one instance, has become everything else than a metal magazine. What the fuck happened? For the last years they have been advertising with bands like Atreyu, My Chemical Romance, Bullet for My Valentine, 30 Seconds to Mars, Architects, Escape the Fate etc on their front page. One does not have to be a genre fascist like me to understand that THESE ARE NOT METAL BANDS. It's freaking called "METAL- hammer". Not "Screamo hammer", "punk-hammer", "emo-hammer" or "hardcore-hammer". Where are all the metal bands?

And metal hammer is not the only one. The metal festivals like Graspop Metal Meeting and Wacken Open Air have gone completly commercial and started booking bands that have little or nothing to do with metal. Bands like Bring Me the Horizon, Heaven Shall Burn, Escape the Fate, The Black Dahlia Murder, Adept, Disturbed etc...

Is this a sign of metal dying? Is the next "enemy" emo-hardcore instead of grunge? Well, metal hammer and the festivals are not metal anymore. Something is happening, and I know I'm not the only one seeing this.

This is not a mocking entry against the listed bands, it's just words of confusion why emo/hardcore bands are taking over in the metal world.

    • The phenomenon that is genre-fascism and about mistagging.

      Jan 18 2011, 1h07

As a very enthusiastic and long-time experieced listener, appreciater and student of what is heavy metal, hard rock and rock music in general, my level of nerdness has become what is known to man as genre-fascism.

This is very nessescary, BECAUSE, there is a lot of mistagging out on last.fm, and there are a lot of newbies, kids and ignorants that think everything with a distorted guitar is metal. This is wrong. Metal is defined by roots in the oldschool genre and a metal subgenre is defined by how big the share of roots still are in the metal area of the music.

Take this example: progressive metal. It is metal, because the ground roots are in metal. It's heavy metal music with the time signatures of progressive rock, the experimentalness of jazz fusion and mixed with whatever other metal or non-metal genres, that depends on the band. But it's metal, because the subgenre is rooted in metal.

metalcore, however, is a hybrid genre. It is NOT, by ANY means, a subgenre of metal. It's hardcore punk with metal influences, basically. The roots of the metalcore genre is in punk, or more spezified: hardcore. When it comes to emo, screamo, emoviolence and scene, these genres are rooted in hardcore and punk as well, the difference from metalcore being that they have nothing to do with metal at all.

Just because a band is hard and with distortion and screamed vocals, doesn't mean it is metal. The first genre to use screamed vocals was hardcore punk. Later, metalbands actually got inspired by hardcore punk when it came to speed and vocal styles, they just evolved them into another level.
And some may say that " Bullet for My Valentine are melodic like metalbands are, and they have the attitude". Well, wrong. They may be melodic, but that's also a very very known characteristic in the melodic hardcore genre. Their attitude is not metal, they are HC-boys.

To be called a metal band,a band must have roots in metal. The sound, the imagery, the style and your musical elements must have roots in metal to be metal. If it doesn't have it, it's something else. There are two things every metal band after 79 on the planet have in common: Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. The inventors, creators and renewers of metal sound. Punk sounds entirely different from metal, and although some new hardcore bands are inspired by metal and have metal elements in their music, it still makes them a hardcore band, not a metal band. There's a difference between a subgenre and a hybrid genre.

No, this is not an attempt to be "trvv". I hate trvv metal fans, they are faggots. This is just to illuminate all the kids, and to show how important genre nazis are! Because we keep the genres in ORDER!

Bands often mistaken for being metal, but are really hardcore with metal influences:

      Bullet for My Valentine
      Bring Me the Horizon
      The Devil Wears Prada
      Escape the Fate
      Atreyu
      All That Remains
      As I Lay Dying
      Parkway Drive
      August Burns Red
      Slipknot

      + all similar artists

      And all similar bands.
No, I'm not questioning however these bands are good or not, I'm just saying that they are not bands in a metal subgenre. They are hardcore bands with metal influence and some of them even grunge roots.

Thanks for reading. And trolling is not nessescary, so just leave the facts to the facts.

    • The top 10 Norwegian vocal gods!

      Ago 19 2010, 23h09

Here's a list of the best Norwegian singers. These guys make me proud to be a Norwegian!

      1. Nils K. Rue - Pagan's Mind
Genre (s): progressive metal, heavy metal

Nils Rue has an enormous range, a well-trained melodic voice with a wide specter, and he can scream better than most vocalists in his league. Like a crossover between Rob Halford and James LaBrie. A wonderful singer with an amazing voice!

      2. Jørn Lande - Jorn, Masterplan, Ark, Beyond Twilight, Avantasia
Genre(s): heavy metal, hard rock, progressive metal, power metal, progressive rock

Jørns powerful voice is already legendary, and his status as the "new Coverdale" has made him a star worldwide, and his popularity is rising every day. His voice is full of punch, power and heaviness. A true voice of rock!

      3. Michael Eriksen - Circus Maximus
      Genre(s): progressive metal

Michael has a very clean, melodic and plain beautiful voice with a wide range and a huge potential. He is one of Norways hidden diamonds. His voice is relaxing and soft, and fits the powerful prog metal of Circus Maximus perfectly!

      4. Roy Sætre Khan - Kamelot, Conception
Genre(s): power metal, progressive metal, Symphonic Metal

Khan also has the soft voice, but he also has a touch of opera in it. His operatic style fits the theatrical music of Kamelot, and his voice is calming and very relaxing.

      5. Jan Thore Grefstad - Saint Deamon, ex- Highland Glory
      Genre(s): heavy metal, power metal

Jan Thore's extremely powerful high-pitched voice is in the league of singers like Michael Kiske, Kai Hansen, Hansi Kürsch and even Bruce Dickinson. Powerful and thrilling!

      6. Morten Harket - a-ha
Genre(s): synth pop, new wave, pop rock

Morten Harket is a natural born vocal-talent, and with his soft and calming voice he certainly deserves a place among the greatest.

      7. Simen Hæstnes/ISC Vortex - Ex Dimmu Borgir, Arcturus, Borknagar
Genre(s): melodic black metal, progressive metal, folk metal, viking metal, opera, symphonic black metal

Most known from Dimmu Borgir, and his operatic and very powerful voice is well-known to most extreme metal fans. He is also and opera-singer in the Norwegian opera, and he has also played in various metal bands.

      8. Athera - Susperia
Genre (s): thrash metal, melodic black metal, melodic death metal

Athera is perhaps one of the most underrated singers in the world. He has a kickass thrashy voice with melodic undertones in it, and he fits perfectly in the raw, brutal metal of Susperia!

      9. Thorbjørn Schei (Thebon) - Keep of Kalessin
Genre(s): black metal, melodic black metal, speed metal, melodic extreme metal

Half-growl with melodic tones, and also very underrated. Thebon's voice is perfect for Keep of Kalessins epic and melodic extreme metal-theater. Full of strenght and power!

      10. Åge Sten Nilsen - Wig Wam
Genre(s): hard rock, glam rock, glam metal, heavy metal, pop rock

Åge Sten Nilsen has a very strong, high pitched voice like the singers had back in the 80's. He reminds of a younger, more aggressive Vince Neil crossed with the power screams of Rob Halford.

Well, there it is. The finest of the Socialist Kingdom!

    • Why "Hardcore Kids" suck!

      Jul 26 2010, 23h04

This is a list of reasons why "hardcore kids" suck. This is fully written based on my own personal experiences, both local, on meetings with larger groups and on internet forums.

Everyone who listens to metal experiences these little faggots (yes, I'm not fully heterosexual, so I have the right to use this word). These annoying, bitter, arrogant little walking wordbombs called "hardcore kids".
I love music, and I try not to generalize it. I love many kinds, but my main attraction is energy, therefore, around 70 % of my musical taste contains of metal music, hard rock and rock music. Because of this, I get attacked verbally by these little gnomes very often. This is a list of reasons why they are really musically and personally degenerated. Not all are like this, of course, but I've met/experienced a lot of these guys, and I'm speaking based on 95 % of them.

      1. They are generic.
      - Therefore they blame YOU for being it. Because they are afraid of their own true personality, and they try to believe they are unique, but really are they all just a big flock of sheep. Nothing wrong with that, it's human nature, but hardcore kids are denying it, and that makes them even more generic. And if you listen to metal music then you're the one they blaming for being it. They don't care if you listen to other music genres, but if you have some metal bands in your charts they assume you're just another generic metalhead. Time to come out of the closet, savvy?

      2. They are prejudists.
      - If you listen to metal, then you're an elitist. That's what they think. "A hardrocker is a hardrocker and noone of them can actually be people with diverse musical taste". Jesus christ, I say. I personally don't like elitists, but I can with my hand on my chest say that I prefer the most ignorant elitist rather than a narrow-minded prejudist hardcore kid. Now that's in the open and no longer bothering me.

      3. They are arrogant.
      - Perhaps something in the childhood messed them up? Maybe not, but the fact is that most of them are very arrogant, and uses ruling-techniques all the time, thinking they are the most superior creations in mother earths nature. They think their opinions are superior, and if they argue with a person who likes metal, then he is a stupid little cunt, because they are more "civiliced and emotional".

      4. They have no respect for opinions.
      - If you disagree with one, you're always the one being wrong. Because they are very convinced that they are right. All the time. And if you don't like their music, then you're the narrow minded one and you're the meathead. And of course, if you don't like their music, you don't respect them as people and you're just another generic metalhead (again). Why don't open your eyes and see that not all people think that Bring me the Horizon is a good band. Because it's really not. My opinion.

      5. They always turn to personal attacks.
      - When they have failed an argument, and also failed to realize it, they start using personal attacks, and here they use their well-evolved arrogance to formulate them. Suddenly they know everything about you and your life and your taste and they desperatly tries to convince you and themselves that they are right about it, and uses the well known prejudism as a weapon. And that's my final reason.

So why are they like this? They accusate everyone who likes metal for being stereotypes, when they are the real stereotypes. They accusate every metalfan, even if the metalfan also likes tons of other music, for being generic, when they are even more generic and insecure. They blame metal fans for being narrow-minded when they are the ones failing to see other opinions and to respect these.
Is this psychological? Why are the majority of them such narrow-minded prejudict, arrogant assholes with no respect for others opinions and tastes? Is it like a zombie-virus ? Maybe we'll never know, but some of us will have a good recogniseable laugh when reading this!

So, now that the truth is out in the open, feel free to troll as much as you like ;)

    • Fantastic band and artists part II

      Jul 11 2010, 19h30

This is part II of the fanastic bands and artist list I've created. Yo-ho!

      Sabaton
Genre (s): heavy metal, power metal

Sabaton is a six-piece band from sweden with the power of metal in one hand and the force of history in the other. They usually have historical themed songs, and especially from the second world war or other wars. They show the lyrics in a very personal point of view, but they also teach their fans something about epic battles, warfare and war history with their fenomenal insight.
The music is bombastic, loud, powerful and some cliche-laden, but loveable. Enormous band and incredeble music!

Recommended albums for a starter: Primo Victoria (2003), The Art of War (2008), Coat of Arms (2010)

      Seventh Wonder
Genre (s): progressive metal, progressive power metal

Seventh Wonder, also swedish band, but in the more progressive league. With significant musicians, an insane vocalist and an incredeble ability to write great concept albums and lyrics, this band is a part of a growing progressive scene in Scandinavia. Their ability to add own feelings and emotions into the music is unique, and their music is dreamy, hard edged, powerful and atmospheric.

Recommended albums for a starter: Waiting in the Wings (2006), Mercy Falls (2008)

      Ensiferum
Genre (s): folk metal, viking metal, pagan metal, epic metal

This epic, heroic folk metal band is Finlands finest, and have over the past few years grown to be one of the most successfull acts in the folk metal genre. Even thought the music had a little more folkish and mysterious touch when Jari Maenpää was still in the band, they still are a great band, and they continue to make their fantastic brand of epic folk metal.

Recommended albums for a starter: Iron (2004), From Afar (2009)

Jorn, Allen-Lande, everything icluding Jørn Lande
Genre (s): heavy metal, hard rock, classic hard rock, progressive metal, power metal

Jørn Lande is the finest lead singer from Norway, and his bands up over the years include Masterplan (he returned in 2009), Beyond Twilight, Ark, Vagabond, Jorn and also Allen-Lande. He's a singer in the old school metal league with influences like David Coverdale, Ronnie James Dio and Ian Gillan. His music is powerful and so is his voice! This is what makes me proud to be a Norwegian!

Recommended albums for a starter: Out to Every Nation (2003), The Duke (2004), Spirit Black (2009). Masterplan: Masterplan (2004), Time To Be King (2010)

      Wintersun
Genre (s): progressive metal, extreme metal, folk metal, epic metal, melodic black metal

Wintersun is the lovechild of multi-instrumentalist Jari Maenpäa, who left Ensiferum in 2004 to start his own project. Wintersun is hard to put a label on, but the genres included is progressive metal, folk metal, speed metal, power metal, melodic metal, black metal and so on. It's a great hybrid of the best metal can offer, and the music is majestic, extreme, powerful, atmospheric and very beautiful. Can't wait for the new album!

      Only one album: Wintersun (2004)

      Helloween
Genre (s): power metal, speed metal

Once led by Kai Hansen, Helloween was the first original power metal band back in the 80's and they are credited for creating the first "happy" metal in the heavy metal scene. During the years they changed lineup several times, and former vocalist legend Michael Kiske was replaced by Andi Deris. Although the fans are divided, I think both vocalists + Kai Hansen on the first record are great. They have always variated their style, added new sounds and never taken themselves too seriously. A band with much humour, power, self-esteem and a lot of kickass riffs!

Recommended albums for a starter: Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II (1988), Master Of The Rings (1994), Keeper of the Seven Keys: The Legacy (2006)

      Gamma Ray
Genre (s): heavy metal, power metal, speed metal

Gamma Ray is the power metal band legend Kai Hansen started after his departure from Helloween in 1989. He continued with is sharp, speedy and melodic style of power metal with Ralph Scheepers on the vocals, but he took over the vocals himself in 1994. Cliche-laden but very powerful and bombastic power metal with a lot of kickass riffs, virtous guitar solos from Kai himself and screaming vocals! One of the greatest german bands to have ever lived!

Recommended albums for a starter: Land Of The Free (1995), Power Plant (1999), No World Order (2001)

      Alice Cooper
Genre (s): hard rock, shock rock, heavy metal, garage rock, industrial metal

Alice Cooper, or Vincent Furnier, is the god of Shock Rock, and his experimenting with the rock music both theatrically and musically is known to all the rock world. He inspired many subgenres of rock, including heavy metal, punk and garage. His theatrical horror image is his legacy, and over the years he has kept a cliche-laden heavy metal attitude and his music is full of rock n roll influences back from the 50's and up to industrial metal from the 90's. He even incorporated elements from new wave, synth pop and art rock on his work in the 80's. The music, the shows, the attitude, it's all made by a genius rock mastermind, and he will always be remembered as a hard rock legend!

Recommended albums for starters: Schools Out (1972), Thrash (1989), Hey Stoopid (1991)

      Circus Maximus
      Genre (s): Progressive Metal

A part of the scandinavian prog metal scene, Circus Maximus is one of the most known Norwegian melodic metal bands and their powerful music is as breathtaking as their musical skills. Specially the vocals are extremely great, and their music is original, brilliant and beautiful. And their ballads are pure awesomeness!

Two albums to recommend: The 1st Chapter (2005), Isolate (2007)

      Pagan's Mind
Genre (s): progressive metal, progressive power metal

One more norwegian prog band. With the best metal guitarist in Norway, Jørn Viggo Lofstad, and the most charismatic singer, Nils K Rue, this band makes progressive metal with spaced atmosphere, lyrics about space, time and mythology and their music is full of aggression, beauty and finesse.

    • Fantastic bands and artists pt 1.

      Jun 25 2010, 1h03

This is the first part of a list of my favourite bands and why I love them. There will be 4 or 5 parts all together.

      Judas Priest
Genre (s): heavy metal, speed metal, classic metal

My all time favourite band, and one of the originators of the Heavy Metal genre. The Judas Priest we know today was first formed in 1969 as the Freight, but changed name in 1970 to Judas Priest, because Al Atkins (now ex-vocalist) had a band before named the same and he had the rights to the name. Known for their energic sound, the hard and wild riffing of Kenneth Downing and Glenn Tipton and the powerful, high-pitched vocals of legend Rob Halford.
The reason why they are my favourite band of all time is because this band is absolutely perfect. Almost all their songs are great. The vocals are the best on the planet, the riffing is perfect, the sound is brilliant, and their experementing with the genre over the years is fantastic. The lyrics are great. Both intelligent and deep lyrics from the 70's and the 00's and the more cheesy anthems from the 80's. They also have excellent ballads!
I discovered Judas Priest in 1999 and became a fanatic fan in 2004.

Recommended records for a starter: Stained Class (1978), Screaming for Vengeance (1982), Angel Of Retribution (2005)

      Symphony X
Genre (s): progressive metal, symphonic metal, neo-classical metal

Symphony X is a band who developed in the 90's and has gained much respect in the Progressive Metal-community over the years, opening for artists like Dream Theater and Queensrÿche, and now they are one of the biggest progressive metal bands in the world. They have a unique sound, a blend between progressive rock signatures, symphonic power metal anthemic choruses, neo-classical structures and a powerful punch with kickass riffing.
Insane skills, beautiful melodies, enormous vocals with a lot of variations between half-harsh, clean and highpitched, stunning solos and huge orchestration-parts. This band is pure excellence and beauty!
I discovered Symphony X in 2006 and became a true fan in 2007.

Recommended records for a starter: The Divine Wings Of Tragedy (1997), Twilight In Olympus (1998), The Odyssey (2002)

      Rush
Genre (s): Progressive Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal

Rush started out with a blues-laden heavy metal sound in the early-mid 70's, but with the record Caress of Steel they adopted a more progressive sound and started using time signatures in their music, which helped them gain a breakthrough. They have always kept their hard rock sound intact, but they have experimented with it and added elements from genres such as folk music, reggae, new wave, synth rock, ambient and blues. They had a very synth-dominated period between 1982 and 1988, but returned to their prog rock roots in the late 80's.
Rush is an amazing and variated band with really nice lyrics, both calm and intense vocals, extraordinary melodies and a drummer who can be considered as the best in history. There's hard to believe that they are just three members, and they make music with so much.. music in it! Impressive and fantastic!
I discovered Rush in 2005 and became a true fan in 2009.

Recommended records for a starter: 2112 (1976), Moving Pictures (1981), Snakes And Arrows (2007)

      Dream Theater
Genre (s): progressive metal, metal fusion

Perhaps the most famous band in its genre. Dream Theater plays a very unique type of progressive metal, and they are also one of the first. But where Fates Warning and Queensrÿche just blended progressive rock with heavy metal, Dream Theater added influences from jazz fusion and funk to their heavy prog metal sound.
To all of you who say they are show-offs and that they can't make good music: You have never heard Dream Theater before. Dream Theaters music is simply beautiful. They write great lyrics, great melodies, good songs and they have magnificent skills. They just play what they are good for, and the music is also so full of feelings and soul and if you really gets into them you feel what they felt when they made the music. They really put all their spirit into this wonderful, perfect music, and they will forever be one of my all time favourite bands!
I discovered Dream Theater in 1995 and became a true fan immediatly.

Recommended records for a starter: Images and Words (1992), Scenes From a Memory (1999), Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009)

      Iron Maiden
      Genre (s): heavy metal, nwobhm

Iron Maiden was the leading act from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the early 80's and they were also one of few bands who gained success after this wave. Starting out with a raw, proggy metal sound on the first two records with vocalist Paul Dianno and later gaining a more melodic, riff-based heavy metal sound with Bruce Dickinson on the mic, they rose to achieve the status as the most successfull heavy metal band of our time.
Maiden's got it all. Very tasteful and melodic, yet hard-edged heavy metal with stunning operatic vocals, epic and deep lyrics, harmonic guitars, punching solos and insane bass-lines. A classic metal band who really has it all!
I discovered Iron Maiden in 1997 and became a true fan in 1999.

Recommended records for a starter: The Number of the Beast (1982), Powerslave (1984), Fear of the Dark (1992)

      Scorpions
Genre (s): heavy metal, hard rock, classic metal

These german heavy metal rockers were the first of their kind in Germany. Inspired by the german kraut-rock scene, british rockers Beatles and hard rock acts as Budgie, Thin Lizzy, Jimi Hendrix and Cream they started getting a psychedelic heavy metal sound in the early 70's, and reachind a halfway neo-classical metal sound in the mid-seventies because of then lead-guitarist Uli Jon Roth. In the late 70's and early 80's they gained a more riff-based heavy metal sound similar to Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, and in the mid 80's they adopted a more commercial anthemic hard rock sound to their music.
Scorpions is a band with a very loyal fan base, and not without reason. Their main purpose is peace, love and rock'n roll, and their music is fantastic, with the exeption of the experimental pop they did in the mid 90's. Their great mix between rocking heavy metal songs and calm, soft ballads is unique. Scorpions is almost 50 % ballads, and that's a great thing. Fantastic music in every way!
I discovered Scorpions in 1998 and became a true fan in 2005

Recommened records for a starter: Taken By Force (1977), Lovedrive (1979), Love At First Sting (1984)

      Dire Straits
Genre (s): pub rock(early), progressive rock, melodic rock

Dire Straits started out as a pub rock band who gained success without having commercial success as their goal at all. Suddenly the world changed for this young band from England, and they sold albums to multi-platinum all over the world. Their music is based on roots rock and pub rock, but they evolved more into a melodic, progressive and a bit more intense rock band over the years.
With the leadership of the ultimate guitar genius Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits remains one of the bands that mean the most to me. The music is so deep. The lyrics are either funny, sorrowful, melancholic or tells a great story. And the awesome guitar-parts from Knopfler doesn't even need to be mentioned!
I discovered Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler in 1994 and became a true fan instantly.

Recommended albums for a starter: Dire Straits (1978), Love Over Gold (1982), Brothers in Arms (1985)

      Opeth
Genre (s): progressive metal, death metal, progressive rock, atmospheric death metal

The unique combination between brutal death metal riffs and calm, progressive and melancholic rock makes Opeth one of the finest musical acts in modern metal scene. The music is unpredictable, varied, dark, beautiful and very charismatic. The way Mikael Åkerfeldt can change between clean vocals and death growls in short time is far beyond greatness, and the fantastic music is atmospheric, dark, energy-laden and very very deep. It's amazing and fantastic in every way possible!
I discovered Opeth in 2004 and became a true fan in 2007.

Recommended albums for a starter: Blackwater Park (2001), Deliverance (2002), Damnation (2003)

      adrenaline kings
      Genre(s): hard rock, heavy metal

Adrenaline Kings is a hard rock band from modern times but with a sound similar to the hard rock and heavy metal acts of the 1980's. The play a brand of melodic heavy metal with anthem choruses and classic rock'n roll structures. The sound is not unique, but it's retro, and the lyrics are great. The music is very nice and rocks like hell, and the ballads are beautiful and sometimes sorrowful. They are a very underrated band, and though they have not had a breakthrough yet, they really deserve one now.
I discovered Adrenaline Kings in 2009 and became a fan instantly!

They have two albums, Adrenaline Kings and Last Days Of Ancient Rome from 2002 and 2006.

      Dio(1982-2010)/Black Sabbath(1979-82)/Heaven & Hell(2006-2010)/Rainbow (1975-79)
Basically everything that involves the great Ronnie James Dio.
Genre (s): heavy metal, speed metal, doom metal, hard rock, classic metal

Ronnie James Dio was one of the greatest heavy metal vocalists on earth, and he is now a legend, perhaps still playing in metal heaven. It was a sad day when he left this world because of his cancer, and many people still lives in sorrow from that day. But his music lives on. His fantastic, fenomenal voice is still amazing, and will never be forgotten. His work with Rainbow was a catchy, melodic hard rock type, then he came to Black Sabbath and saved them from a catastrophy, giving them a new, more straightforward heavy metal sound, and after leaving Sabbath he started Dio as his own project, which leaned towards melodic speed metal and initially laid down the groundworks for power metal and epic metal. He rejoined Sabbath in 1991-92 and finally in 2006 under the bane Heaven and Hell, which became his last project before he died. He made rock'n roll and metal music for over 5 decades, and he was the oldest active heavy metal musician. He also gave heavy metal an own greeting sign, the Moloik, which he had learned from his grandmother. All hail Ronnie James Dio. May you rest in peace and may your voice live forever!
I discovered Ronnie James Dio in 1997 and became a fan in 1998.

      Recommended albums for starters:
Rainbow: Long Live Rock 'n' Roll (1978)
Black Sabbath: Heaven and Hell (1980)
Dio: Holy Diver (1983), Sacred Heart (1985)
Heaven & Hell: The Devil You Know (2006)
