MUSIC WOT I LIKES 15-09-2011

In this edition we have lots and lots of epic metal/screamo! I really am going to try and make it through this without using the term 'post-metal' just because it's overused and a bit silly. Some of you might already know these bands because some of you told me about them! but I thought I'd share out the knowledge anyway. If you want to hear more of these bands, I'm sure you people know what to do…

There is a sort of order to these bands, the nearer they are the top, the more you need to listen to them!

Wow, is how I describe this band. One of the most adventurous sounds I've heard in a while. A massive combination of many different areas. But now I'm going to put most of you off and say some of the heavier parts sound like (good) deathcore. But this music is ALOT more sprawling and complicated than that, with plenty of introspective parts. I would compare them not in sound but in approach to bands like maudlin of the Well and I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, in their way of combining many many different styles into a something cohesive. Just bloody listen to them and see this is high class stuff!

I had a listen to their album "III". There is some real Isis/Cult of Luna worship going on here as ever but they have a real sense of how to make a great melody (something I value alot right now) which makes them a worthy listen. They pull off some great riffs and climaxes, there are a few more uninspired moments but they are worth ignoring to hear whats good. Probably my favorite of the bunch here. Quite similar to Rosetta but with a bit more metal in them.

Thanks to Laurence for this one!

Reminds me of Heaven In Her Arms for some reason. Alot of soaring tremolo guitar lines with screamy vocals basically, some classical elements add to this and make it stand out from the crowd. Lots of people seem to be using the term Black Metal when describing this band, they have no fucking clue! good stuff indeed!

Battle of Britian Memorial

Bioshock themed epic screamo, blimey! certainly know how to weave a good melody, and have a female vocalist who screams and does some spoken word and clean singing which adds a nice edge of difference to their music. Very much cut from the epic screamo template but they do it very well.
EDIT! - sorry it's a guy vocalist.

As pointed out by Laurence they have some great art on their site:

So i think I had the wrong impression of this band, I thought I’d heard them before and they were boring generic sludgey stuff. But it turns out, on their full length at least they aren’t! With distant sounding vocals, and a good mix of the chug and more epic riffs, with a bit of ‘neocrust’ thrown in they manage to get their own satisfying take on this whole sound, with quite a dreamy quality to the songs, something you probably know I love.

Desidia play music that is a bit in the vein of the epic hardcore of the first Fall of Efrafa album, Ictus (I’m trying not to use the term neocrust, as it’s as silly as post-metal!) and a bit quiet and introspective at other times. Very well executed and enjoyable, plenty of ups and downs in the music.

Another good example of the epic screamo sound, well worth checking out if you are a fan of the style. Their first EP ‘10’ is a little darker and rawer than most bands in this style, which their newer EP ‘11’ is alot more refined.

Epic screamo is the name of the game here, fairly expansive and slow on the whole. Check them out.
