A belief that extreme misery is bad and ought to be mitigated or even eliminated, or a belief that equality of opportunity or certain freedoms essential to human flourishing are good and ought to be promoted. There are other goods that I believe in, but those are about the only ones that I can even conceive of dying for.

I'm more like Bertrand Russell, I guess. I have beliefs, but I would never die for them because I might be wrong. Unless, of course, I had absolutely nothing else booked for the rest of my life and had the opportunity to die for my beliefs in a way that's mind-blowingly heroic. Oh, and at some point I would have to be able to say something incredibly awesome (and quotable) that would be repeated with deep awe and admiration throughout the ages. Then maybe I'd do it.

But if you believe in absolutely nothing then you become a nihilist which basically means you're an unlikable asshole.

Ah, not Prometheus Rising or Quantum Psychology, it's Cosmic Trigger I: "My own opinion is that belief is the death of intelligence. As soon as one believes a doctrine of any sort, or assumes certitude, one stops thinking about that aspect of existence. The more certitude one assumes, the less there is left to think about, and a person sure of everything would never have any need to think about anything and might be considered clinically dead under current medical standards, where absence of brain activity is taken to mean that life has ended."
