around april 2010, jazz really clicked for me and i got kinda obsessive about it. so far i've even bought about half a dozen books i'm still working my way through… i'm really glad though and look forward to delving even deeper into all kinds of jazz.
here's an interesting rundown of jazz musicians in my top 100 of all time (almost 6 years in total):
22 miles davis
39 john coltrane
65 thelonious monk
88 ahmad jamal
and then a few more:
145 charlie parker
152 herbie hancock
211 charles mingus
and here's a list of the jazz musicians in my top 100 of just the past year:
2 miles davis
7 thelonious monk
10 john coltrane
14 ahmad jamal
33 charlie parker
65 eric dolphy
70 charles mingus
71 ornette coleman
83 art blakey & the jazz messengers
96 sun ra
i went from zero jazz musicians in the top 20 overall to four in last year's top 15! that's a pretty big jump
to be fair, herbie hancock would probably be higher, but his songs are too long so they don't tally up as frequently.
i'd like to get more familiar with the following musicians in the next few months:
albert ayler
cannonball adderley
cecil taylor
dexter gordon
freddie hubbard
joe henderson
ornette coleman
pharoah sanders
sonny rollins
sun ra
wayne shorter
plus pre-fusion jazz guitar from
wes montgomery and django reinhardt
and i still haven't listened to enough louis armstrong, dizzy gillespie, and duke ellington
· if you stumbled upon this and have more recommendations, i'd love to hear them!!
