On February 25th, the Portuguese net audio community Beats Play Free will commemorate one year of existence. Among other events marking the date, a session of multi streaming will take place during approximately fifteen hours in the course of which will be presented a non-exhaustive review of some Portuguese net labels, including a DJ session by Braindance. During the second part of the event, projects active in the free music’s domain such as La Main Traumatique, Boiar, IS KYA, Astronota, Empathy Kills and ocp are to be performed. The event will close with a two-hour jam session with all the participants playing simultaneously.

[BPF002] VVAA "Talvi" (Winter Edition)

Sazonalmente, e correspondendo a cada uma das estações do ano (Outono/Inverno/Primavera/Verão), o BPF irá editar uma colectânea reunindo as escolhas musicais dos seus membros. O nome da colectânea será sempre o da respectiva estação e em diferentes línguas. Esta segunda edição tem o título “Talvi” (Inverno em Finlandês) e conta com 18 sugestões dos elementos que constituem o BPF.

“Talvi” reúne, então, 18 propostas ecléticas que servem de montra à variedade de géneros musicais presentes no netaudio, resultado directo da liberdade estética usufruida pelas bandas e artistas. De facto, ao longo desta hora e meia podemos ouvir desde a electrónica melódica ao beat mais impreguenado, passando por temas marcadamente mais experimentais ou faixas de base acústica e vocal mais alternativas. De facto, apresentam-se o groove elegante de AGF, o IDM nostálgico de Ikimashoo Aoi, a dureza da linha dançável de ocp, a sensibilidade de Cantaloup entre muitos outros cuja liberdade e sentimento mais “invernal” são a linha de união.

Quer se leia o Inverno como frio, confortável, escuro, dramático, belo ou melancólico, estas 18 sugestões são uma excelente proposta para adornar o Inverno de quem as ouve. Bom Inverno e até à Primavera!

Beats Play Free (BPF) is a free informal music disclosure platform, edited according to Creative Commons licensing. The BPF staff meet at the beatsplayfree.com blog to put together DJ sets nights and live acts throughout the country. They have started a podcast and are now releasing the second volume of free music under the theme “Winter”.

This collective is made up of several elements: national netlabels’ bosses, musicians, producers, radio DJs, bloggers and free culture activists. Different people with different tastes, bound by one cause: free music.

Every season, BPF will edit a compilation of the musical choices of its elements. The compilation will be named after the season when it is released, and always in a different language. This second edition is called “Talvi”, Finnish for “Winter”.

“Talvi” compiles 18 eclectic suggestions that illustrate the diversity of musical genres in netaudio, which is a direct result of the aesthetic freedom enjoyed by bands and artists. In fact, throughout these 90 minutes we can listen to music ranging from IDM to rough beats, including cutting edge sounds and guitar and vocals based indie music. The common subjects in all these tracks are freedom and a wintry feel.

Whether you feel winter as cold, comfortable, dark, dramatic, beautiful or melancholy, these 18 suggestions are an excellent way to adorn the listeners winter. Have a good winter and see you in the spring!

Beats Play Free (BPF) is an informal platform for promotion of free and free-of-charge music, published according to Creative Commons licences. It started out as a blog, and then evolved into cheerful night events with DJ sets and live acts at different locations in Portugal; it has created a podcast – still in an intermittent phase – and is now making its debut in the release of music compilations.

BPF is also a reunion of several people, from national netlabel creators to musicians and producers, amongst radio broadcasters, bloggers and free-music activists. Different people with different stories and a broad variety of tastes and interests, coming together under a single cause: free music.

On a regular basis, following the four seasons of the year (Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer), BPF will release a compilation assembling the music choices of its members.

The name of each release will always be of the corresponding season, every time in a different language. This first compilation is titled осень (the Russian word for Fall).

"осень" compiles 19 suggestions ranging from older, and somewhat "historic", themes up to some new tracks, fresh out the oven, from electronica to rock, through indietronica, experimental or dub, not only from Portuguese netlabels but also from netlabels around the world. It includes songs and instrumental pieces, as well as local and foreign artists. And it even includes two unreleased tracks.

"осень" reflects the members of this platform’s diversity of experiences and plurality of tastes. In “осень” one can still feel some warm sun, but some raindrops are falling down; one can already feel a chilly wind blowing, ripping the leaves off the trees; it still wears cotton, but it goes around with wool around the neck; it is still colourful, but the shades of grey are settling in. And many of the sound landscapes we will encounter here already carry the melancholic spirit befitting this time of the year, when days become shorter and nights grow long.
