Coheed&Circa 5/7 @ Roseland

Fri 7 May – Coheed and Cambria, Circa Survive, Torche

Coheed + Circa = Tour from Heaven. These two bands are just perfect for each other. They used to be homies on Equal Vision back in the day, although each has now signed onto major labels. Both bands play hard-to-classify progressive/alternative rock, Circa tinged with post-hardcore and Coheed flavored with heavy metal. And of course, they both have vocalists that make use of falsetto and can sing in a higher register than many females. This show was great for me personally, because Coheed and Circa were two of my favorite bands in high school and I was flushed with nostalgia every time they played an old song.

THE SHOW

We arrived just after Circa Survive started playing. I must say their live show keeps getting better and better every time I see them. Anthony's vocals were spot on, although he does tend to improvise a little and throw in new lyrics on the fly. Nevertheless, his voice could melt butter and I loved the Saosinesque screaming he has been throwing on the new album and was able to reproduce perfectly live as well. Blue Sky Noise is outstanding, the best album yet. I didn't keep track of the whole set list but I know they played:

- Get Out
- In Fear and Faith
- In the Morning and Amazing
- The Great Golden Baby
- Living Together
- The Glorious Nosebleed
- Through the Desert Alone

Coheed and Cambria was amazing as always. The sound was especially good this time around at the Roseland. Claudio's voice sounded great through the entire set, the rest of the band was shredding, and they even threw in a new person on synth. I was a bit surprised about which albums they chose to play, I expected a lot of YOTBR which they did play, but I expected more Good Apollo. It was great to hear the songs from SSTB and IKSSE3 though (especially 2113). Al the Killer was a total surprise. It's such a great song, but it's a little weird to hear a whole audience screaming 'Die white girls!' (of course, we were all just quoting Al, who is a psychopath, so it's ok).

Album tally:
Second Stage Turbine Blade……………… II
In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3……. IIIII
Good Apollo Im Burning Star 4, Vol. 1… I
Good Apollo Im Burning Star 4, Vol. 2… I
Year of the Black Rainbow……………….. IIIIIII
