Music to Dance To (Part 1)

Hello again, folks. So - if you've known me at all, you've surely seen that bit on my profile about my penchant for dancing. Well, ever wondered, "Well, what could Lee possibly dance to?" Probably not, but I've been dying to write about it for months now, so I shall. This is not an exercise in hipster egotism - there's some crowd pleasers on here, too - just some suggestions for other fellow victims of the dance out there. ; )

This first installment encompasses eight of my go-to tracks for cutting a jig. I've strived to not use any artist twice - although I was tempted to many, many times. No particular order.

1. Blue Light (Ultravox) - Actually, this one's on top for a reason. Because I simply cannot listen to this track anymore without being compelled to dance.

2. Dominator (Killing Joke) - Get your primal groove on with this one. I try to strike some sort of pose in four beats at "Dom-i-nat-or!"

3. Dancing (Bauhaus) - Seems a bit obvious, doesn't it? But you can't just cut a rug here - you've got to rip the whole damn thing off the floor. The beat's frenetic, and Murphy screams and revels like a madman. So dance like you're possessed!

4. Electric Feel (MGMT) - Yeah, I know: but that's so overrated! and et cetera. Honestly, though, if you haven't strutted about the room and pretended that YOU were the chick with that electric feel, you may never understand just how fantastic this track really is. (Sorry, guys.)

5. Not Me (This Mortal Coil) - Yes, that black (and bouncy) sheep of This Mortal Coil's recordings. Love this one to death. Best part's near the end, when the drums go into a brief shuffle - that's when I break out into a little shuffle of my own. ; )

6. Der Mussolini (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft) - I can't do the Mussolini. But I try. Gloriously. Like in all good EBM music, the crazed beat remains constant throughout, so find the groove and run with it.

7. S.U.S (The Ruts) - Ready to dance with a vengeance? The massive chorus and the major drum action in this one can lend to some great rock theatrics. Perfect for blowing steam.

8. Making Flippy Floppy (The Talking Heads) - For the record, Speaking in Tongues is surely the funkiest thing that the Talking Heads (and maybe even David Byrne) ever put out. That said, choosing just one track from this album to feature in my list was certainly tricky - but, in the end, the intoxicating groove on "Making Flippy Floppy" is certainly my fave. And can't beat the Latin-esque bell breakdown.

9. The Thinking Flame (Magazine) - Tucked away on Magazine's least impressive album is this succinct and suave tune. Love all the stop-and-start moments, and especially the glorious ending.

10. Going Underground (The Jam) - Jubilation! Ever-shifting beats, well-timed cymbal crashes - and POW-POW-POW!

That's all for this segment. Next time, I'll disclose a few more obscure cuts from my favorite indie artists.
