a late response to the bbc folk awards

Folk Awards Winners 2010

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS WENT TO:
Nanci Griffith and Dick Gaughan

i like nanci so not going to critisise her, just not totally sure why the bbc folk awards would honour her .
Dick - his contiibution to the uk folk scene isn't desputable, a great folk artist deserving of the award

GOOD TRADITION AWARD:
Transatlantic Sessions

no arguement from me on ths one

FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR:
And the winner was:Jon Boden
Other nominees were:
Cara Dillon
Jackie Oates
Martin Simpson

as a short list of nominees i really can't argue with this list (ok if it were me id have a longer list of nominations as there are a good number of artists deserving to stand alongside these], Boden is prob my least fav of the artists on this list but thats more down to personal taste than anything else.

BEST DUO:
The winner was: Show of Hands{/artist]
Other nominees were:
Belshazzar's Feast
Damien Barber & Mike Wilson
Megson

do show of hands count as a duo or should they really be in the groups catagory? given there are been counted as a a duo then yes think they did deserve to win.

BEST GROUP:
The winner was:Lau
Other nominees were:
[artistBellowhead
Mawkin:Causley
The Unthanks

Lau won, i've seen them last year - very impressed but think i'd have backed the unthanks to win this one.

BEST ALBUM:
The winner was: Hill of Thieves - Cara Dillon
Other nominees were:
Here's The Tender Coming - The Unthanks
Hyperboreans - Jackie Oates
True Stories - Martin Simpson

(ok thats 4 albums i need to buy)

BEST ORIGINAL SONG:
The winner was: Arrogance Ignorance and Greed - Steve Knightley
(performed by Show of Hands)

i'm sure it was only a year or two back that folks were moaning that show of hands were continually overlooked by folk awards - something changed. good song (though not the best on the album in my opinion)
Other nominees were:
Home Again - Martin Simpson
One Day - Martin Simpson/Martin Taylor (performed by Martin Simpson)
The Testimony of Patience Kershaw - Frank Higgins (performed by The Unthanks)

BEST TRADITIONAL TRACK:
The winner was: Sir Patrick Spens - Martin Simpson
Other nominees were:
Cutty Wren - Mawkin:Causley
Spencer the Rover - Cara Dillon
The Isle of France - Jackie Oates

certainly can't argue with the judges on this one (very impressed with cara and jackie too, mawkin: Causley i'm yet to be convinced by and i've heard stronger versions of cutty wren)

HORIZON AWARD:
The winner was : Sam Carter
Other nominees were:
Hannah James and Sam Sweeney
Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts
Nancy Wallace

personally i'd have voted for Kat and Jamie (great album well worth checking out) but congrats to Sam, i definatly want to hear more by all of these.

MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR:
The winner was: John Kirkpatrick
Other nominees were:
John McCusker
Martin Simpson
Saul Rose

BEST LIVE ACT:
The winner was: Bellowhead
Other nominees were:
Edward II
Lau
The Bad Shepherds

Lau was the only one of these four i've seen live and that was a great gig, really wanting to see the bad shepherds live.

FOLK CLUB OF THE YEAR:
The Magpies Nest

awards like this usually provoke stong reactions so i'd be very interested to hear anyones reactions to the lists - i'm more interested in who folks think have been overlooked than in general rants .
