@NiKoMaN: yes, In Sides is a masterpiece and it's quite accessible. My favorite Orbital albums are Orbital 2, In Sides, Snivilisation & Blue Album. The Altogether & Orbital 1 (except the fantastic Belfast, Chime & Midnight) are pretty good. I need to listen more to Middle of Nowhere. PS the song "Are We Here" is too long for its own good. I prefer the single version.

I have to say I love to see this discussion goin' round about Orbial's best album. "In Sides" is too impenetrable. I find it hard to go beyond "The Girl" and "PETROL", although these two are simply masterpieces. Maybe I should listen to it more. O2 is great but a bit too one-dimensional. MON will probably be my favorite Orbital record.

I agree jeff with all you said actually... In Sides is a very deep album, it's very difficult to get your mind around it all. One of the greatest albums of all time, and definitely Orbital's greatest work for me. I also just saw they say they were trying new material out in Seville, so i am hopeful to see new stuff this year sometime. I believe they are back with it all now, as said before Don't Stop Me is bloomin fantastic and The Gun Is Good is great too.

benharris: You're right. Orbital is better than most of the others due to their sense of melody and percussion workouts. I think having such a melodic nature gives the listener something to latch onto emotionally. They proved electronic music can be just that, emotional. - As to when new material is coming, I would guess late this year or early next year. They are set to play some new work @ Glastonbury in July.

OPS is one of their weakest tracks. I get the feeling they where running out of ideas by that point, it's evident on that album why they called it a day. But In Sides is their magnum opus. It carries that melodic sense they have so well, taking it to a darker place. There is such a unique depressing feeling, in a subtle sense, that is quite unlike anything else I have heard in music. I think a lot of that has to do with the pacing and clash between that blissful uplifting feel they are known for, contrasted with minimal dissonance. After listening to that album for a good five years now, I still haven't fully wrapped my mind around its depth and complexity. it's really unbelievable.

I do agree with FuturaDLX though, in that the momentum of the first three tracks carried throughout would have elevated its status considerably - Nothing Left 1 & 2 is definitely in the right vein, but to my mind, the two central tracks have always disrupted the natural flow. And though it feels out of place and kind of tagged on the end, 'Style' still generates a fantastic buzz for me, and makes for a cracking album closer - I love it!

Yep, that's also up there. The whole album is quality, but i think the first 3 tracks are just spot on!

I agree, but the main aspect for me was the main breakdown, where it has an extra bit just before it which i think is quality, and made me consider trying to somehow mix that into the main single somehow! I'm really into Orbital at the minute. The Middle Of Nowhere i've never really given a go before, but what an album it is. Far better than the highly overrated Blue Album. One Perfect Sunrise is a nice track and all but it doesn't get near the first 3 tracks on MON if you ask me! The first 3 tracks are as good as Orbital get imo. Their sense of rhythm and melody is something to behold, as In Sides i believe demonstrates so well. Don't really know many other bands that close to Orbital's sound. The sheer amount of genius in it is very difficult to get close to. I just can't wait for new stuff. Seeing as you are quite a big fan jeff, when do you think we will hear new stuff, and more importantly that album?

benharris: What made the demo better for me was the female VOX sample that was removed in the final mix for a vocoder. The former sample was much more Orbital-esque. Their sound works really well with female vocals so it really wrapped up what had worked in their sound in the past while meshing it with a current electro sound.

Got hold of the demo now of Don't Stop Me, and it is so much better than the original imo of Don't Stop Me and i thought the original was incredible. But everything about that demo was more epic and sounded a lot better in general. I would hope if it comes out on the album (which i cannot blooming wait for) that they return to that sound, plus keep a length similar to that of the demo, it suits a longer feel. Anyone know when we can expect to see this album anyway? Gonna be one of the biggest albums for me in years!

"How come "The Middle of Nowhere" isn't talked about? The first 3 tracks are brilliant." Agreed. It's like two different albums stuck together. If they'd carried the momentum of the first 3 tracks it would have been an awesome album. It's like Saving Private Ryan in musical form. =]

I keep on hearing about previous versions of Don't Stop Me, and that they are better. Could someone tell me where to get hold of them? The track is definitely proof that Orbital still have it and that that their comeback album should be incredible! The breakdown in it is brilliant.

I find it strange Leftfield get more plays than Orbital but the shoutbox for Orbital is so much more lively.

Hey! I got two new albums up. One's titled, "Ethereal Plain", and it's a completely ambient record, kind of along the lines of Selected Ambient Works by Aphex Twin, and the other is titled "85 2 1", and it's all downtempo electronic, with a really chill vibe, along the lines of Outkast or Guru, or DJ Shadow. Check em out and let me know what you think!!!!

I had put off listening to Orbital for many months... I am beginning to see the stupidity of that decision!
