been thinking some but no writing and also letting you chill after the excitement of last weekend yadda. thanks for checking. Was hoping Kris would give some thoughts too. I'll get back to you. It's a whirlwind for me these last 2 days due to non-music related old-people things...30 year reunions and long lost girlfriends...not that I have them in every city...but quite a demand on the time and resources...

holy shit dude, nice charts! I have a strange feeling you play guitar... I'm the guitarist for Wolvengard, thans for the shout. Its refreshing to hear some actual constructive criticism, instead of just "you guys rock", or "you fuckin suck!", lol. Its all self produced, so theres a little room for improvement! later dude...

Hi Grant, your thoughs over in my shout box are very close to my opinion of EVH's influence. Well stated too. I'll add one thing. opinion really, I followed/listened to EVH and as many other guitar players as I could from 1978 until maybe Y2000 and I noticed EVH sounds in contemporay guitarists all thru the 80's and 90's. Then when Steve Vai came along I heard a ton of Vai' sounds in guitarists as well, (like a mix of Vai and Van Halen). So in a big big gerneralization, EVH and Vai had influenced so much that nothing much new was created as far as "style" throughout the 80's and 90's (of that genre and related areas of that genre). That's at least what I heard in the gutarists of the 80', and 90's. Karl

thanks Grant for the good discussion and patience to reply. I'll be reading sablespecter journals in the Heavy Metal group and true we should keep it all over in those forums and out of our shout-boxes. You and Kris are just too well organized for most people, (like me), and I mean that in a good way

Hi Grant, or as my buddy Arteee would say\\\\Grant Chappy\\\\ I was happy to notice that you were the group leader of Heavy Metal. Also may have answered my own wonderings about the origins of Heavy Metal simply by spending some time reading. Turns out I'd be wasting time posting the question because I think it's been answered pretty well in the cover matter of heavy metal group. I was going to suggest that the first modern heavy metal bands were actually big bands of the30’s, 40’s, 50's and 60's with horns and drums/bass. But I've convinced myself that that is really not even debatable. Even though big bands had a massive power chord horn sections with driving kick-in-the-gut drums and bass, (depending on the song), that cannot be called Heavy Metal because it’s just not Heavy Metal. A one/five power chord does not define a genre.

I'm leaning toward doing the post on the Heavy Metal group and seeing how that sticks on the wall. And when I have collected my thoughts well enough to post, I'm going to bounce the post off of you first for further advise. Now to join that group and look around for a few days...k

Hi Grant, that link to MaidenHell's journal was the one I was talking about that I had seen but it's more a family tree kind of thing and it's good reading yes. Good tips though on the linking and that's the tips I had in mind to squeeze out of your experience and knowledge with this format. thanks for that and thumbs up.

Grant, are there any journal discussion going around last.fm, current or past, that speak on the origin of heavy metal? I know there are some history of Metal journal entries out there but I'm wondering if any good lively discussion and debate ever showed up anywhere. I have my opinions which I think are probably quite far fetched so I won't drop that opinion in public right now. I know I can start a journal in my space but I think that a good place might be in your space. An established place of good discussion...if you know what I mean. Reason for my curiosity on origin of metal or heavy metal is that all the same music sounds have been long established for hundreds/thousands of years and quite possibly there really was no true origin of heavy metal. Just an origin of the naming of that genre. That was one quick dump of mind jibberish from me. So what do you say we discuss this? Karl

I did not know that the Bissonette bros played on The Extremist. And you know, I don't even have that album but when I get home tonight I might iTune buy it. I'm listening to last.fm of The Extremist now and it does sound like Mr. Bissonette on drums. Please tell this nub (me) how to link the artist like you do in the Shoutbox. Did not say a word to Mr. G. B. in that drum booth because he was drumming haha but I thought it was so cool to just walk in there and stand there..also had windows for the outside-inlookers. Funny about how guitars play eh. Some are such a joy when you touch them and others are just clunkers. I bought probably one of the 1st JEM777FP to be made, sight unseen, and it was the worst playing guitar I ever touched. Then later bought a VBK on display in a store and it was the best playing guitar I ever touched, (2nd best actually), a friends Peavey Vandenburg was the #1 best I ever touched. And so! you do play guitar!

Grant, just for fun and because I see your Paul Gilbert guitar avatar, I'm working on making a nice photo of my JEM77 vbk to use as an avatar occasionally. I stood in the crowd of onlookers when Vai unveiled the new Ibanez JEM line up in 1987 at the Orange County (California) convention center. (NAMM convention). That was before digital photography was popular so I have numerous small photo prints of all the wild design JEM guitars from that day. Very cool day that was because I mingled with, (gazed at really), guitar heros like Jeff Beck and Steve Vai. Other name-drops can wait but drummer Gregg Bissonette was there and playing all day to backing tracks in a booth and you could stand next to him while he played. I knew him from Maynard Ferguson days but later he went on to drum for David Lee Roth (with Vai and bassist Billy Sheehan and Matt Bissonette his brother). Neat memories. I'm telling these stories because it looks like so many here can "relate". Karl Ellwein

Ok, excellent.....quickly.....I have to fight my silly human tendency to look "down" at "young" folk....and please forgive me if there is ever any hint from me that I would do that....my excuse it that it's human nature and I'm a human..hehe...with a lame excuse. LOL. but what I'm trying to say is I've read even more in your journals and have been learning quite a lot...so keep it coming....I also dropped a friend request of you and you'll notice that. So hit the books and study....and hit the accept button. Cheers from the USA. .

Hello Grant....excellent....this is quite the place to be for the music lover and thinking-man, (thinking woman). Enjoyed your Steve Vai journal entry and appreciate the work/time/energy that goes into something like that. Vai grabbed my attention I think around 1985 or 1986 when I would read all of his teaching material and magazine articles and that Carvin Amp demo thing he did was available as a magazine floppy record, (that I could not play on my turntable or on guitar). Fun and early days of the guitar virtuoso movement. What else do we have gonig on in here? I gotta check out all of these well read and clear speaking friends of yours. Cheers!.......oh and let me leave you with one suggestion and that is to attend the European Drag Racing Finals at Santa Pod north west of London...if you already have not experience the nitro-methane fuel cars...this is somthing you must put on your list of things-to-do-before-I-die.

Just stopping over to wish you (early) a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Check your PM for a small gift, and a check off of one on my list of things I owe you! P.S. I see from below that the statute of limitations, or ah, just my time, has run out on another thing I owed you: pointers on BÖC! One of the several things that fell off the plate this fall...but still near the top of my "want to" list. Lemme know what you think when you have some time to get through it, and I'll still try and put together some thoughts for you on that soon. BTW...our show on Dec 18th was one of the last three of their shows for this year, all three of which got cancelled when Buck Dharma fell down the steps at home and hurt his shoulder! Supposed to be rescheduled for sometime early in 2009. My guess is it will be last week of January or else some time in February.

Re: "kind of an unfortunate coincidence then that I've just announced that I'm going to be cutting down to around three entries a week." Well, if I wouldn't have been such a ghost in your town these past few months, I would have seen that, wouldn't I? You've certainly earned your stripes with the dedication. It IS tough, as you can see how spotty I've been since back in the summer. I still have TONS of music to pull from and so much big selections and ideas to get to, and no less passion for it, but my issue is just TIME. I actually get grouchy when I can't get here because I like doing this so much, but real life calls. Regardless of how often you do it, your quality prevails. I and Kris and the others know what quality review we get from the UK office! I will continue to look forward to it and exchanging ideas with you. I hope to soon take a stroll through what I've missed from you the past few months, perhaps between Christmas and New Year's once class is done and I'm off work.

How do, don't have much to post really but just a few little things I thought you may like. I know how open minded you are when it comes to music so thought I'd drop some things here so hopefully you listen to them. Firstly Maggot Brain by Funkadelic (which I think we've already discussed but I forget). The second is The Black Mages which I'm pretty sure you already knew about but I didn't want you to miss this one =P : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5st0b3ln5U Finally, A cool band called Sebkha-Chott have quite a few songs on here. They're pretty cool, a sort of disco-metal type thing. I'm not great at descriptions here, but check out Hymen =D

No apologies necessary. Misunderstandings happen. And the compatibility meter? yea, I've already experienced that too. I've found a couple of friends that the meter says we aren't compatible. And regarding your last statement, I have a whole journal entry on that subject (Too old to Rock and Roll, Too Young to Die). I've been listening to music too long to waste my time on mediocre stuff, not to mention the money involved in buying it. Give me the good stuff!!! :)

Howdy GrantRS. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. My reference is to the quality of music, not the similarity of sound. Drowning Pool and Whitesnake seem to pull off one song each album that stands out (sometimes like a sore thumb) as different, or creative or something. I get the feeling that Alice Cooper got lazy on this album. Not that being lazy is any kind of sin, but it is just a disappointing album. Alice Cooper is a much better musician than those groups. The reference is more to say that he can do better, and why didn't he? I also notice that our music compatibility is very low so we may never agree on much. But that's ok, that's why there is so much music out there to play.

I see what you mean and understand you completely by the way on your recent comment on my journal. The only reason why I am listening to a decent helping of Slipknot at the minute is because I just got their new album off my friend and I've never really listened to them before, so I'm just listening to them to decide whether I like them or not. Their new album is pretty good though I must say. Thanks for the comment. :)

RE: "Do you realise that if you look at the Fleetwood Mac artist page right now all three of the journals on the right are yours? That means in the last three days not a single person has connected a journal to Fleetwood Mac." Ah, I missed that, having not been here in almost two weeks. But three days is TOO long for someone to have not connected to them! And now I have the newest entry!

Hail! No worries. And it's nothing you all did! I miss y'all and the daily journaling a helluva lot. It's a combination of things. Every night this week I had something going on, but mostly it's this Rock class I'm taking...there's a lot of reading and WRITING for it. Which I'm digging a lot (all A-grades so far! ), but it takes what little time I've had lately to write over HERE. Rest assured though, that I've been squirreling away bits of time here and there to cobble the journals together. My current theme is to get through all of the AotY for the 1970s, and as you can see from the one for 1971, they're significant posts. I'm posting three more today and will try to catch them up some more in the next few days. You had asked for 1977, I think...hold on! Good stuff that year!

It's on an album called "Zen Shred Zone" by The Tobias Hurwitz Band. I've no idea which track it is but the only song I've heard is the title track from a youtube video which... well the tone is absolutely rubbish so I can't really pass judgement. I've heard a few Planet X songs but not enough to really pass much judgement. Will check some more out and let you know what I think =P

I guess the NWOBHM should ring the bell but, unfortunately, it doesn't and somehow I'm too lazy at the moment to google it. However, I do thank you for the recommendation. Now I'll definitely give Saxon a try. That is, as soon as I get my hands on them and I can't say if that's an easy task here.

Howdy, long time no talk, again... Sorry about not responding before, I thought I'd reply when i got around to listening to that track but I never did. I tried out that Devil's Slingshot album. It's a bit bland isn't it? Why is it that when several virtuosi get together it suddenly becomes incredibly boring? Strange. Oh well... Anyway, I heard of a track that has a 'duel' with Michael Angelo Batio and Mattias IA Eklundh and wondered if you have it anyway. Sounds like it could be interesting... I don't really have any great musical discoveries to share with you I'm afraid. Most of my money has gone on funk albums recently so all I have is Maggot Brain by funkadelic (if you've not heard it) and check out Aurelius which are a metal/orchestral thing but much more... hmmm, well, it's Metal & Orchestral music just not like, symphonic I suppose.

I'm just amazed that it took so long for me to see that you are the leader! I never paid attention to groups until recently, and now they're waaay down on the page, even below journals, and I don't usually get beyond those. In fact, I saw you were the leader not by seeing your groups. I was trying a solution to this issue of not knowing about replies-to-replies on each others' journals: did you know you can look at the replytracker of anyone? I didn't. Just go to my page and put "/replytracker" on the end of the address to see mine. It's not an automatic solution, but easier remembering to rummage through all the posts individually. (It would be automatic if you subscribe to its RSS feed, but then you'd see all the unrelated stuff, too.) Seems a bit nosey, and subs'ing to the feed would kinda feel like snooping through the mail! (IM in UR feedz, snoopin' UR shoutz...) Anyway, I saw lotsa of forum posts from there on your RT, *then* saw you were the leader...duh.

He's got a massive discography. Population Override, Colma, and Electric Tears are great albums that aren't wacky.
